Event Details

Are you a developer that has always wanted to make a contribution to education but haven't known how to get involved? Saturday 30 July is an opportunity for you to put your skills to good use, and join us at Stellenbosch University. Our website FullMarks is in need of improvement - we need your help!

FullMarks is our free and open online assessment bank for educators, which saves them time setting tests. It contains questions and answers that have been donated and uploaded by educators, and are freely available for all educators to access, adapt and share.

FullMarks is in need of some changes. On Saturday 30 July we would like to do the following:

1. Profile the contributions made by authors on an author profile page.

2. Improve the topic browser to allow users to browse topic trees from different metadata organisations without being associated with a particular one.

3. Make FullMarks assessment items available to external web services using a known XML standard, possibly QTI.

4. Make it possible to embed a FullMarks assessment item into another site using an iframe.

Which is why we are calling on developers that know Python, Plone (bonus!) and Java to help make and implement these changes. No previous experience with Plone is necessary but knowledge of Python is required. This sprint offers you a real opportunity to get into Plone development for the first time and learn first-hand from Plone experts.

Running concurrently with this sprint, also in the FIRGA lab, is our Afrikaans translation Hackathon. For more details on this, please follow this link:

Who are we?

Siyavula is the umbrella under which we run our various initiatives. Siyavula is a Shuttleworth Foundation seeded project which supports the development of local curriculum-aligned Open Education Resources (OERs) and communities of educators sharing and collaborating. All our activities focus on the open sharing of educational resources (www.siyavula.com) and include a selection of free and open FET Science and Mathematics textbooks (www.fhsst.org), openly licensed GET learner workbooks (http://siyavula.cnx.org/lenses/siyavula) and an open assessment bank called FullMarks (www.fullmarks.org.za), for the sharing and accessing of test and exam questions with answers. We have just launched our mobile front-end, making access to these free resources on-line even easier - point your phone at m.siyavula.cnx.org
